Flevo Hospital, Almere

Urban style hospital

A new and larger hospital is inevitable for Almere. The city's growth is explosive and the expansion will be triple the hospital floor area. A ring around the existing building will be the building's 'face', integrating the 'old' and the 'new'. Because of this ring, existing care facilities can be expanded and new functions such as haemodialysis, rehabilitation and radiotherapy added. Originally, the polder hospital was located in an open landscape, whereas the new hospital lies in the middle of Almere's city centre - a great challenge in a city hub that is becoming ever more densely built.

Owing to the design, the existing hospital can be flexibly expanded on all sides. The 18-metre-wide building structure provides room for different uses, such as outpatient clinics, offices, patient rooms and an OR. Four building layers high, the ring fits in with its urban surroundings, and the space between the ring and the existing building offers a patio-type area. A roofed inner court with little shops forms a public transition area between city and hospital. This area is linked to the existing inner street that will continue to play an important part and is vital to the hospital's image.
