Gelre hospital , Zutphen

Flexible and distinctive

The ensemble of a specific and a universal building section transforms the location into a striking site. There is a clear separation of functions. The specific and high-tech standard hospital facilities such as operating theatres, radiology, laboratories and pharmacy are concentrated in a separate part of the building, also known as the 'hot floor'. The 'hotel' with patient rooms, outpatient clinics and offices is placed in a different universal and market-conforming section of the building, the so-called 'comb area', where the RGC (regional mental health care centre) is also located.

The distinction between specific and universal building sections allows for flexible use of functions and real estate in the future. For instance, the hot floor can be expanded or duplicated next to the current hot floor. With a future patient bed reduction in mind, nursing departments and outpatient clinics are interchangeable. The comb structure is equipped with extra entrances at the front, making this part of the building interesting for other market participants as well.

The hospital has a distinctive identity. Visitors can park under the entrance deck and the hot floor. The use of glass grants the hot floor a professional and technical appearance, while the use of stone and wood gives the other buildings, which have a more residential function, a warmer appearance. The building mass is at its highest on the entrance side and gradually becomes lower in the direction of the residential area. The hospital is surrounded by water that is part of a natural stream, which gives the complex a distinction all of its own.
