Sustainable diving in a lily
The Rijkerswoerdse lakes between Arnhem and Elst will create a nice decor for the Seafari Indoor Diving and Snorkelling Centre. According to the province of Gelderland, the plan fits the vision for the Park Lingezegen area; a decision-making procedure is still underway at the municipality of Overbetuwe.
We want to achieve high marks for the building when it comes to climate, water, energy, sustainability and the environment. The centre will be located in the water, shaped like an 18m-high lily floating on the water. The building will have its own distinct look as a landmark, which fits well in its environment. The lily consists of four leaves for the basin. Four new leaves lie on the basin, in which the other functions are located. The building's shape and its unique characteristics also require a conscious, distinct use of materials. This could conceivably include a membrane that stretches over the entire building. The span can be created with bent wooden trusses. The diving basin is round and 12 metres deep. Surrounding this is a separate snorkelling course 4 metres deep and approximately 100 m in length. The water is chlorine-free, so fish could swim in it. The other part of the building houses a reception room, facilities for divers, a restaurant with a view of the (indoor) water, a shop and classrooms.
